How to Better Understand Your Target Customer

If you want to figure out how your customers shop, you don’t ask them to fill out a survey, you observe their patterns. How do you observe? Buckle up, that jungle is Reddit.

💡Resource up!

I saw this question in one of my community groups and it reminded me: I need to show you one of my favorite resources, GummySearch.

Yes, there are plenty of classic sentiment analysis software companies like SEMRush, Brand24, and Crayon. But, if you need to pull quotes for an investor deck or don’t know what features to prioritize for your MVP (most viable product), GummySearch is a founder’s playground. Can you tell I come from the startup space? 😉 I’m going to show you how I would use it:

🤓 Select Your Topic

For example, if you own a skincare company, start by selecting targeted subreddits for your research. These subreddits will serve as your focus groups as you ask questions and look at trends.

👩‍🔬 Explore

Take a look around- what are the hot discussions? What are the trending niches in your category? Which ones are on the decline this week?

🙋‍♀️ Ask Your Questions

Define your research objectives:

  1. What key information do you need about your audience?

  2. How does your product or service address a specific problem?

  3. What hypothesis are you testing?

For instance, you might want to know where your target audience purchases skincare products. By focusing on these skincare subreddits that GummySearch is diving through, you're already tapping into a community of people who are actively seeking solutions to skin issues. This validates that these users are highly motivated to find effective skincare options, making them valuable sources of insight for your research.

😯 Try to Surprise Yourself

If you’re trying this exercise with me, that probably means you’re an expert in the field you’re researching. As the saying goes, you don’t know what you don’t know. I came across this quote as one of the top upvoted threads (means popular):

I only started getting into multi-step skincare this year, so I’m sure I’m just hyper-aware/sensitive to any changes but I could not believe how different my skin felt by smoking for just 1 week. Crazy.

35, Female

After I read that, it got my wheels turning and inspired me to think of creating a social media video series about the positive skincare effects through the lens of former smokers. I never would have come to that conclusion on my own.

🚀 Bonus Points

Take some of the topics from the hot discussions tab and ask ChatGPT to create social media hooks to solve the problem.

Copy This Prompt:

Your task is to craft engaging social media hooks that offer solutions to problems discussed in a series of Reddit discussions.

The hooks should be designed to catch the attention of users on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

To achieve this, keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • The hook must be concise and attention-grabbing;

  • Clearly present the problem and hint at the solution;

  • Use an action-oriented language that encourages users to learn more or engage;

  • Consider including emojis and hashtags to increase engagement;

  • Match the tone and style of the specific social media platform;

Please study the example below and follow a similar style:
“”"
Discussion: “I’m struggling with staying focused while working from home. Any tips?”
Hook: “WFH distractions driving you crazy? Discover 5 proven ways to stay laser-focused 💡 #ProductivityHacks #WFH”
“”"

The Reddit discussions can be found below, surrounded by triple quotes:
“”“… insert Reddit discussions here …”“”

Please generate the social media hooks according to the guidelines above.

There’s some great free resources on the site, but I did the research above by purchasing a $10 day pass use my link below to try it out!
