🕺 AI: IRL

I had the joy of attending AI on the Lot last week and got to speak to a few of you there!

🎞️ AI: Cannes International Film Festival

From Grief to Innovation: Cronenberg Explores AI's Role in Filmmaking

“Do we welcome that? Do we fear that? Both. It’s like nuclear fission, it’s ferocious and terrifying and it’s also incredibly useful.”

  • David Cronenberg acknowledged the potential of AI technology to transform filmmaking by generating entire movies from detailed screenplays, eliminating the need for actors and production crews.

  • Cronenberg expressed uncertainty about whether to welcome or fear such AI capabilities in filmmaking.

  • Cronenberg's new film "The Shrouds" explores themes of grief, technology, and the monitoring of the dead, taking some inspiration from the death of his wife in 2017.

  • While containing body horror elements, the film relies more on emotion than its typical avant-garde stylings.

AI-Enhanced Putin Biopic: A Groundbreaking Sale at Cannes

"To come extremely close to the dictator, we needed Putin, not an actor with make-up."

  • Polish director Patryk Vega has made a controversial biopic about Vladimir Putin using deepfake AI technology to superimpose Putin's face onto an actor's body.

  • The film, simply titled "Putin", has already been sold in 50 countries ahead of its September premiere.

  • Vega used AI to generate just Putin's face for the deepfake.

  • The use of AI for deepfakes in filmmaking is a major concern in Hollywood, where the technology threatens many jobs like special effects technicians and extras.

  • However, some argue AI can also enable creative possibilities previously impossible. There are debates around regulating and being "responsible" with this disruptive technology.

AI and Gender Bias: Cannes Next Panel Explores Solutions and Opportunities

"We need to rectify biases and foster inclusivity within the AI ecosystem to ensure diverse and equitable representation in the film and TV industry."

  • The panel discussion at Cannes Next's inaugural Her Tech Story event highlighted the persistent gender bias in the film and TV industry and explored AI's dual role as both a challenge and an opportunity in addressing this bias.

  • The discussion covered topics like gender stereotypes embedded in AI algorithms, underrepresentation of women in AI development roles, and the need for diverse representation in decision-making spheres.

  • Speakers shared personal experiences navigating male-dominated fields, the hurdles posed by gender bias, and their efforts to combat these barriers and foster gender parity within their organizations.

  • Companies like CastingForm are leveraging AI to enable global talent discovery and empower actors to manage their AI likenesses.

  • The conversation underscored the imperative of women's engagement with technology and AI to navigate the evolving landscape of content creation.

  • Challenges discussed included combating biases in AI while ensuring equitable access to resources like funding and technological tools for underrepresented groups. The panel envisioned AI-generated movies as a potential new genre that could facilitate easier content creation for emerging filmmakers.

Here are some awesome open positions in the AI space that I would love to see one of our readers fill:

FUN FACT: I know I shared a lot about Cannes today, because it’s my goal to speak there. Putting this out into the universe: if you know someone who wants a media presence there next year, let’s make it happen.

Definition: Generative AI

Generative AI models create new data by discovering patterns in data inputs or training data. For example, creating an original short story based on analyzing existing, published short stories.
